1997Sister Judith Uhlenkott
Sister Judy earned a B.A. in Education from the University of Idaho and an M.A. In Educational Leadership from the University of Alabama. She celebrated her 25th. Jubilee of Profession in 1987. She taught school in Lewiston, Pocatello, Nezperce and Boise, Idaho. In 1969 she accompanied other Sisters from Cottonwood and the Federation of St. Gertrude to Bogotá, Colombia, to teach at Colegio San Carlos, a school run by the Benedictine monks of Richardton, North Dakota. Thirteen years later, when the Sisters who had been administering Colegio Santa Maria returned to the United States, the Archdiocese of Bogotá asked the Cottonwood Benedictines to administer the K-12 school. Sister Judy served as school superintendent for nine years. She returned to the United States in 1993. Sister Judy has been a gentle, loving, and profoundly loyal friend and mentor to many, both within and outside her Benedictine community. Her struggle with and embrace of her illness over the past years has been a quiet, yet remarkable inspiration for all those who have known her. The gift of her presence and wisdom will support all those who have loved her. Sister Judy is survived by her parents, three sisters, Anna Marie Brannan of Auburn, WA, Susan Reinhardt and Jean Uhlenkott, both of Spokane, WA; and three nieces and a nephew. A Vigil Service for her was held in the Chapel at the Monastery of St. Gertrude on Sunday, November 2 at 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated for her on Monday, November 3 at 11:00 a.m. in the Monastery Chapel. The Presider was Rev. Norbert Lemke, S.J., Chaplain at the Monastery. Sister Mary Kay Henry, Prioress, was the Homilist. age at the After high school she was hired by various families to help with housekeeping, cooking, etc. until she entered St. Gertrude's in September, 1937. She made her Profession as a Benedictine Sister there in March, 1939. She celebrated her 50th Jubilee in 1989 by visiting family and friends. Most of her years in the community were spent in domestic services at Our Lady of Consolation Hospital, Cottonwood; St. Valentine's Hospital, Wendell, Idaho; and the Monastery, Cottonwood. With inspiring faith, compassion and concern for the needs of others, she spent most of her last ten years praying for the Sisters, the Church and all the needs of the world. Sister Florentine was always recognized by her quick smile, willingness to do the extras, and her love for the Sisters and for her family. Although she was usually quite serious, she delighted many people with her quick wit. She was preceded in death by her parents, and her sisters Sister Cyrilla and Mrs. Theresa Theis. She is survived by her brothers Paul, Benedict and Raymond, all of Richmond, MN, and her sisters Lidwina Kemper and Cele Silvers of Richmond, Sister Lucille of St. Cloud, MN, and Sister Wilma of Cottonwood, ID and numerous nieces and nephews and their families. A Vigil Service for her was held in the Chapel at the Monastery of St. Gertrude on Friday, October 17 at 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated for her on Saturday, October 18 at 9:00 a.m. The presider was Rev. She received five years of her education in Belgium and three in Germany. Upon returning from Europe she entered the Benedictine Convent at Clyde, Missouri and then entered St. Gertrude's Convent in 1926 where she made Monastic Profession as a Benedictine Sister on July 25, 1928. She celebrated her 60th Jubilee of Profession on June 30, 1988. Sr. Deodata taught for forty years in Keuterville, Greencreek, and Cottonwood, Idaho, including more than thirty years at St. Gertrude's Academy. Thousands of students learned French, German, and bookkeeping under her gentle guidance. She expected the best from each of her students, and wartime years in Europe and her own loving family helped shape her as a woman of kindness toward everyone. Since she retired, she has continued to help translate French and German letters and other documents. A true and loyal friend to many, she supported them with her prayers. She loved to spend time before the Blessed Sacrament; a friend called her "a special soul called by God." She truly lived out her name: Deodata--given by God. A Vigil Service for her was held in the Chapel at the Monastery of St. Gertrude on October 9 at 7:00. Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on October 10 at 2:00 p.m. in the Monastery Chapel.
