 Sister Gregory Carey

Sr. Gregory CareySister Mary Gregory (Marie Louise) Carey, 83, died of cancer at the Monastery of St. Gertrude, Cottonwood, ID October 27, 1998. She was born in Dubuque, Iowa, April 28, 1915 to Robert Bechtel and Katherine Carey.

Sister Gregory entered the monastery at Cottonwood on August 14, 1932 where she made Profession as a Benedictine Sister on August 20, 1934.

From 1932 - 1967 Sister Gregory was a classroom teacher and music instructor in Chewelah, Colton, and Pomeroy, WA; Cottonwood, St. Maries, Nampa, Nezperce, Keuterville, Greencreek, Ferdinand, Boise, and Grangeville, ID. For the past 30 years she has been at the Monastery of St. Gertrude, Cottonwood, where she served on faculty and was the Director of Development for St. Gertrude’s College for 14 years and continued teaching music until last winter.

Sister Gregory is remembered for her outstanding talents in teaching, music, art, sewing, fancywork and cooking. Her family, friends and students enjoyed her quick wit and keen humor and ascribe part of their successes to the many ways she encouraged them to use their talents fully.

She is survived by a half-brother Raymond Furry of Puyallup, WA; three half-sisters, Sylvia Ewart, Ruth Cardy, and Violet Brandy all of Dubuque, IA; and many nieces and nephews.

The Benedictine Sisters thank all those who participated in the Vigil Service held for Sister Gregory in the Monastery Chapel, October 30, 7:00 p.m., and in the Mass of Christian Burial celebrated for her October 31, 10:00 a.m.. Rev. Daniel Pekarske, SDS Chaplain at the Monastery, was Presider. Sr. Mary Kay Henry, Prioress, gave the reflections. Sister Gregory was laid to rest in the Monastery cemetery.

Sister Engelberta UhlenkottSr. Engelberta Uhlenkott

Sister Engelberta (Anna Marie) Uhlenkott, 99, died of causes related to age on July 27, 1998. She was born in Cottonwood, March 12, 1899, to Joseph and Amalia Frei Uhlenkott.

She joined the Benedictine Sisters in Cottonwood on February 8, 1917, and made her Monastic Profession in 1918.

Sr. Engelberta ministered in the domestic arts for many years at St. Gertrude's and in convents in Greencreek, St. Maries and Nezperce, and at St. Martin's College in Lacey, WA. She also ministered as a nurse at St. Valentine's Hospital in Wendell, ID, and St. Mary's Hospital in Cottonwood.

Sr. Engelberta is remembered especially for her deep faith, good humor, patient manner, keen mind and interest in other people. She loved to pray, play cards, and visit with her family. She enjoyed a good joke and story, and had a repertoire of both.

Sr. Engelberta is survived by her brothers, Al and Ray Uhlenkott of Cottonwood, ID, her sister, Sr. M. Augustine Uhlenkott of the Monastery of St. Gertrude, and numerous nieces, nephews and their families. Her brothers John, Joseph, and Bernard preceded her in death.

A vigil service was held in the chapel at the Monastery of St. Gertrude at 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, July 29. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 6:00 p.m. Thursday, July 30, with Rev. Andrew Schumacher presiding. Reflection were given by Sister Mary Kay Henry, Prioress at the monastery.


Sister Coletta Weiand

Sister Coletta (Bardella Bridget) Weiand, 82 died of cancer at the Monastery of St. Gertrude, Cottonwood, ID, on May 1, 1998. She was born in Beulah, ND, on May 19, 1916, to Nicholas and Catherine (Skalsky) Weiand, the sixth of eleven children.

Sr. Coletta WeiandShe joined the Benedictine Sisters in Cottonwood, ID, February 9, 1934, and made her Monastic Profession there in 1936. On her 60th Jubilee in 1996, Sister Coletta said, " I am grateful and thankful I am still her, still alive, in the community. God is good."

She worked in domestic arts for 16 years at St. Gertrude's; Our Lady of Consolation Hospital, Cottonwood; and St. Martin's College, Lacey, WA. Then she enjoyed eight years of ministry at St. Valentine's Hospital, Wendell, ID; St. Benedicts Family Medical Center, Jerome, ID; St. Gertrude's Academy and St. Mary's Hospital, Cottonwood, ID. Her last 25 years of active ministry were spent teaching in Catholic schools in Genesee, Ferdinand, Cottonwood, Grangeville and Boise, ID. After retiring from teaching in 1984, Sr. Coletta served at the monastery as sacristan, seamstress and coordinator of the arts and crafts store.

Sister Coletta will be remembered by many as an energetic woman with innovative ideas, very devoted to her family, to the sisters and to the people with whom she worked; and as faithful to prayer, interested in many things, eager for good conversation and a laugh.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her sisters Ida I, Florence, Antonia, Ida II, and her brothers Leo, Clemence, Raymond, and Donald. She is survived by her sisters Claudia Sada of Cleveland, OH, and Marjorie Prest of West Mifflin, PA, and by numerous nieces and nephews and their families.

A Vigil Service for her was held in the chapel at the Monastery of St. Gertrude on Sunday, May 3 at 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Monday, May 4 at 4:00 p.m. The Presider was Rev. Norbert Lemke, S.J., Chaplain at the Monastery. Reflections were given by Sister Mary Kay Henry, Prioress at the Monastery.
