A Retreat...

...is the opportunity to set aside time to listen more closely to what God is doing in your life, think, reflect and pray. But sometimes it isn't possible to get away. Your schedule and commitments can make it difficult to travel a long distance to a retreat center.

For people who want a retreat experience but can't get away, the Monastery of St. Gertrude offers Outreach Retreats at the place you choose for your parish, church or group.

For groups of any size a member of our retreat team will come to your site to lead a retreat on one of the following topics:

Feasting At Wisdom's Banquet:  Learning Wisdom's Ways
The Biblical Figure of Wisdom teaches us about the feminine nature of God
and calls us to claim our own wisdom as women.
Presenter: Teresa Jackson O.S.B.

Voices From the Margins:
Listening to the Hidden Women of the Gospels
When we read the Gospel stories, we often forget that women were among the
first and strongest disciples of Jesus. Look again at the stories of these women and how they are role models of faith and discipleship in difficult times.
Presenter: Teresa Jackson O.S.B.

Healing the Whole:
Gospel Stories of Community Healing
In the Gospel Jesus doesn't just heal individuals; he heals whole  communities. These stories help us work toward greater wholeness in our family, church and world.
Presenter: Teresa Jackson O.S.B.

Faith After 40
Each faith journey is unique but there are some common elements. A look at
seeking God with perseverance.
Presenter: Sr. Meg Sass O.S.B.

Healing Hospitality
In this time of personal, national and international chaos, discover God’s
gift of healing hospitality, a prelude to peace.
Presenter: Sr. Meg Sass O.S.B.

Leadership Matters:  A Remedy for Burnout
Leadership becomes difficult when we lose touch with what matters.  Exploring
the Scriptural account of creation (earth, air, fire and water) with contemporary organizational insights of Peter Block and others, this workshop will help leaders stay excited, healthy and centered.
Presenter: Sr. Meg Sass O.S.B.

A Circle of Women
Scripture is rich with stories of women of faith who supported, guided and
rejoiced with each other. Through prayer, story, sharing and ritual we will celebrate this legacy of our faith tradition and its presence in our own lives.
Presenter: Kathy McFaul

Hearts on Fire:  Praying with the Mystics
Many of the mystics had experiences of God that set their hearts ablaze. How
do their understandings of God’s love through joy as well as sorrow speak to our lives today?
Presenter: Kathy McFaul

Welcome to the Feast:  Wondering at God’s Abundant Love
Do we view life as a feast of abundance or as a time of scarcity?  How does
our understanding of God’s abundant care color every aspect of our life?  Celebrate the abundance and richness we call “life.”
Presenter: Judith Brower O.S.B.

Discovering the Monk Within:  There’s a Wee Bit of Monk in Each of Us!
What qualities of monastic life and spirituality resonate with all of us and
challenge how we live our “everyday?” For starters, how about moderation, simplicity, balance, openness to growth and change, and a sense of welcome for each new day?
Presenter: Judith Brower O.S.B.

Habits of the Heart
Jesus calls each of us to be open to a paradigm shift in our values. What
are the habits of my heart? Would the people of the apostles’ time recognize us as followers/seekers of Jesus? This is an opportunity to look at how Christianity challenges what our culture offers us as values.
Presenter: Judith Brower O.S.B.

Lectio Divina:  Welcoming God’s Word
This form of prayer is a movement out of the Head into the Heart and out
into Life. Not study, not even Scripture study, not an intellectual head trip, it opens us to the living Word of God at the level of feeling and longing. We allow the Word to touch something in us that God wants to touch.
Presenter: Judith Brower O.S.B.

A Time to Forgive
Learn how to let go of anger and embrace forgiveness.
Presenter: Barbara Jean Glodowski O.S.B.

From Age-ing to Sage-ing
A seminar to help you discover the true meaning of life span development and
empower you to open yourself to God’s grace. This presentation, which will help you live with vitality rather than die longer, is recommended for all ages.
Presenter: Barbara Jean Glodowski O.S.B.

The Universe is Dancing: Where Are My Shoes?
A chance to explore how we human beings can move in harmony with ourselves,
other humans, nature and God. How can we be Good News in our chaotic world?  Based on the video series The Earth’s Imagination by Dr. Brian Swimme.
Presenter: Mary Kay Henry O.S.B.

Back to the Future
“Re-spect” means to look again. On the 40th anniversary of the Second
Vatican Council in 1962, we “re-spect” the rich images and directives of the four major documents of Vatican II and how they foment a hope-filled future for the church and the world.
Presenter: Mary Kay Henry O.S.B.

Wide Paths on the Narrow Way
A pastoral look at the “State of the Church,” with insights into how the
Catholic Church can be an expression of God’s presence in the post-modem era. Discuss the challenges and responses for being The People of God today. Based on Brave New Church: From Tumult to Trust by William J. Bausch.
Presenter: Mary Kay Henry O.S.B.

Making the Scripture Stories Our Own:   Entering Into Scripture Through Midrash
We read the stories of the Bible with our heads, but do we know how to read
them with our hearts? Using the ancient Jewish practice of “Midrash,” explore the stories of Scripture through imagination, discussion and reflection. This workshop presents an exciting way to explore Scripture with adults.
Presenters: Teresa Jackson O.S.B.
& Kathy McFaul

Living in Harmony With All of Creation
Our spiritual journey is intimately connected to the physical world about
us. The Northwest Bishops’ Pastoral Letter on the Columbia River encourages us to reflect upon the role of creation in our faith life and how the Church calls us to respond.
Presenter: Carol Ann Wassmuth O.S.B.

Feeding Our Hunger:  Spiritual Practices From the Monastic Tradition
Many of us today feel a deep spiritual hunger. We have a sense of longing,
emptiness, lack of fulfillment and desire for a deeper spirituality, a deeper relationship with God. One way to begin to fill this hunger is to look at the way we “practice our faith. Do our spiritual lives incorporate the ancient practices of Christianity that will give us more depth to our faith?

The Monastery of St. Gertrude presents six short programs to introduce people to spiritual practices rooted in the monastic tradition. These programs are designed for small groups in a parish or Church that want to explore practical ways to deepen their spirituality. Designed to be 2-3 hours in length and emphasizing discussion, personal sharing and practical application, these programs can be offered weekly, monthly or in any other order. A separate brochure is available.

Religious Communities: Members of our retreat team are available to give community retreats on a variety of topics.

Advent and Lent “Mini-Retreats”: Contact us to receive a brochure of our 2-hour “mini-retreats” available in Advent and Lent.

On-Line Retreats:   No time to go to a retreat? Check out our "on-line retreats" on our web

How Do Outreach Retreats Work?

Length:  Outreach Retreats are generally designed as a morning and afternoon, but longer or shorter versions are possible.

Cost:  The suggested donation of $75 per session (each morning, afternoon or evening constitutes a session) plus transportation, is negotiable.

Scheduling:  If you are interested in arranging an Outreach Retreat at your site, please plan to schedule it several weeks in advance.

Spiritual Direction

Spiritual direction is the opportunity to discuss your spiritual life and relationship with God with an experienced companion.

In regularly scheduled meetings a spiritual director listens, encourages and accompanies you on  your spiritual journey.

Because a spiritual director may be hard to find, the Monastery of St. Gertrude offers the services of a spiritual director to people in local parishes.

This service is available in a limited geographic area.  Please contact us for more information.
