The pressing needs
of the pioneer families in Idaho called the sisters to respond quickly and
progressively, first locally, then statewide and beyond.
For the past 125 years the sisters have
ministered mainly in Idaho and throughout the northwest establishing schools and
hospitals, helping in parishes, and working in social service agencies.
Currently 14 sisters are engaged in such
works away from the monastery. This includes California,
Minnesota and especially Washington and other places in Idaho. The 54 sisters,
novices and postulants who reside at the monastery reach out through such ministries
as:
- The Prayer Ministry is a profound gift the
sisters offer by praying for the needs of the world and of family and
friends, especially those who request prayers.
- The Book &
Gift Shop at St. Gertrude’s offers unique hand crafted gift items
and an outstanding selection of books on spirituality.
- The
Historical Museum at St. Gertrude is a general interest museum that
focuses on pioneer life in North Central Idaho. Committed to preserving
and interpreting the past for the future, the museum hosts 6,000 visitors
from around the world annually.
- The Retreat/Spiritulity Ministry
is a thriving ministry that also hosts sojourners from around the
globe. Retreatants discover the space and time at the monastery to
rejuvenate, contemplate, and be strengthened to live out the
transformations of their life commitments.
- Stewardship
of the Land is a ministry which flows into and out of all that the
sisters do at the Monastery. This stewardship encompasses the stewardship
forest, tree farm, organic gardens and herbal healing.
