Monastery of St. Gertrude-Virtual Tour

The Towers and the Sacred Heart of Jesus

The bright red 97-foot twin bell towers are clearly visible from Highway 95 as you cross the Camas Prairie.

The towers are home to the four bells used to call the monastic community to prayer three times each day.  The bells are named in honor of the Sacred Heart, St. Joseph, St. Gabriel and St. Michael.  The last two bells were given to the Benedictine Sisters by the monks of St. Michael's Monastery when it closed in 1925.

The Sacred Heart of Jesus

The statue in the niche between the towers depicts the Sacred Heart of Jesus. When we arrived in Cottonwood we dedicated ourselves to the Sacred Heart and desired to name the monastery that.  When we asked then Bishop Glorieux his advice he discouraged naming it Sacred Heart because of the plethora of parishes, schools and hospitals with that name.  He recommended naming it in honor of the Benedictine nun, Gertrude of Helfta, traditionally credited for initiating the devotion to the Sacred Heart.

Many of the items you see outside and inside the chapel were donated by friends and family of members of our community. We acknowledge their gracious generosity and offer daily prayers for their intentions.
