Monastery of St. Gertrude-Virtual Tour
Altar Details

The focus of the ornate altar is the
tabernacle flanked by two gold-leafed angels bowed in adoration of the
Blessed Sacrament reserved there. |
Behind the angels is a heavy copper plate
with the symbol of the name of Jesus imposed on blue enamel. |
The tabernacle sits atop a gradin on which copper plates
are fastened. The gilded message reads Sanctus, Sanctus, Sanctus, Dominus
Deus Sabaoth, or Holy, Holy, Holy Lord God of Hosts. |
The base of the altar is arranged in three divisions
for the preservation of relics. During November the doors are removed so the
gilded relic cases are visible. |
The walls on either side of the baldachin show two
enclosed arches which were once windows from the infirmary. They allowed sisters
who were sick to participate in community prayer. |
Many of the items you see
outside and inside the chapel were donated by friends and family of members of
our community. We acknowledge their gracious generosity and offer daily prayers
for their intentions.
