Monastery of St. Gertrude-Virtual Tour

Side Shrines

Chapel Shine St. Gertrude and the Sacred Heart

The two side shrines were formerly side altars in the original wooden convent.  They were purchased from the Philips Company in Dubuque, IA in 1909. The altar tables were removed from them during the chapel restoration in 1990

The shrine on the right honors St. Gertrude of Helfta, the monastery's patron, who was a 13th century German Benedictine nun. She is often depicted with the Sacred Heart of Jesus because in The Revelations of St. Gertrude, she records her prayer experiences of Christ's deep personal love for her and for all people.

Chapel Shrine St. Benedict and St. Scholastica with the Blessed Mother

The left shrine honors Saints Benedict and Scholastica, the 5th century twins who founded the Benedictine Order. They are depicted with the Blessed Mother because the of the traditional devotion to Mary in Benedictine spirituality.

Many of the items you see outside and inside the chapel were donated by friends and family of members of our community. We acknowledge their gracious generosity and offer daily prayers for their intentions.
