SGA Salutes Centennial
As
part of the 2008 - 2009 Centennial celebration of “100 Years ‘at
Home’ in Idaho” the Monastery of St. Gertrude hosted a series of
free concerts entitled “TRADITIONS SHAPING TOMORROW” – a celebration
of our friends in music and story, honoring Benedictine traditions
of the past; celebrating present traditions at St. Gertrude’s and
featuring local and regional musicians.
St. Gertrude’s Academy (SGA) Alumni
from our local Camas Prairie area as well as cities around the
Northwest gathered in the monastery chapel to sing hits from today
and yesterday as part of the second concert in the series. Held on
the Feast of St. Gertrude of Helfta, Sunday November 16, 2008, the
event honored the faculty and students of the former St. Gertrude's
Academy (SGA – the sisters’ Catholic High School for 42 years), and
St. Gertrude of Helfta – patroness of the monastery and SGA, author
and spiritual director. The concert featured former SGA students and
faculty singing hits from today and yesterday.
SGA Alumni in the Choral Group included: Debbie
Stubbers, Donna Ivie, Jackie Forsmann, Jan Robinson, Joan Dufresne,
Kathy Stubbers, Kathy Hanley, Louise Stolz, Margie Wallace, Angie
Nuxoll, Marcie Beckman, Stella Jacobson, Terry Burton, Sylvia Uhling,
Shelley Celmer, Kate Martin, Bonnie Gehring, Debbie Stegner,
Accompanist, Eloise Riener.
The concert opened
with a brief presentation about the traditions and values of St.
Gertrude, and how the sisters express these traditions and values today.
Audience members of all ages enjoyed participating in the fun -
especially the Academy's Fight Song.
