Our Monastery of St. Gertrude volunteers assist us in many ways.

Volunteer Program

at the Monastery of St. Gertrude

Join us as a monastic volunteer!

The Monastery of St. Gertrude offers many opportunities to our volunteers to serve in our monastic community. St. Gertrude's invites monastery volunteers to live within our spiritual community, assist on a regular basis with ministry tasks and community support, or help with special, monastic community projects.

Our volunteers are invited to join in daily prayer as they experience a spiritual lifestyle and the balance and daily rhythm of the monastic community at the Monastery of St. Gertrude.

The monastery is situated on 150 remote, wooded acres in the heart of northern Idaho’s Camas Prairie – a beautiful, rural area of plains, mountains and forest. The monastery campus features gardens, orchards and spectacular hiking trails while the surrounding mountains, rivers and forests provide outdoor adventures of all sorts.

Come and explore this incredible
setting as a:

  • Live-in Monastery Volunteer
The Benedictine Sisters at the Monastery of St. Gertrude invite you to come and experience a balanced, spiritual lifestyle of prayer, work, silence and solitude while you listen to, discern and experience our monastic community's daily rhythm of activity and contemplation. Applications for live-in volunteers are accepted from women or men in good health, between the ages of 21 and 70. Monastery volunteers work approximately four hours a day. Work opportunities include gardening, outdoor work, helping with clerical duties, kitchen and dishwashing help, housekeeping, food preservation, computer work, hospitality or other activities. Live-in monastery volunteers have time for private prayer, journaling, walking or other leisure activities and are invited to share in monastery educational opportunities. Our volunteers are also invited to join the Benedictine Sisters for daily prayer (Liturgy of the Hours) and Mass. For an application* or more information about becoming a live-in monastery volunteer, contact Sr. Teresa Jackson, Volunteer Coordinator, at 208-962-3224 or volunteer@stgertrudes.org.

*We cannot guarantee that applicants will be offered a volunteer position. First-time monastery volunteers typically stay for up to two weeks on a trial basis. Volunteers are responsible for their own insurance, medical costs, personal needs and transportation. Room and Board is furnished by the monastery. All volunteers are required to submit references and accept the Volunteer Policy of the Monastery of St. Gertrude.
