Join us as a monastic volunteer!

The Center for Benedictine Life at the Monastery of St. Gertrude offers many opportunities to volunteers of all Christian denominations to serve in the monastic community. St. Gertrude’s invites monastery volunteers to live within the spiritual community, assist on a regular basis with ministry tasks and community support, or help with special, monastic community projects.

Volunteers are invited to join in daily prayer and experience a spiritual lifestyle with a balance and daily rhythm of the monastic community.

The monastery is situated on 150 remote, wooded acres in the heart of northern Idaho’s Camas Prairie – a beautiful, rural area of plains, mountains and forest. The monastery campus features gardens, orchards and spectacular hiking trails, while the surrounding mountains, rivers and forests provide outdoor adventures of all sorts.

Live-in Monastery Volunteer

The Center for Benedictine Life at the Monastery of St. Gertrude invites those interested to come and experience a balanced, spiritual lifestyle of prayer, work, silence and solitude while being immersed in the monastic community’s daily rhythm of activity and contemplation. Applications for live-in volunteers are accepted from women or men in good health.

Monastery volunteers work approximately four hours a day. Work opportunities include gardening, outdoor work, helping with clerical duties, kitchen and dishwashing help, housekeeping, food preservation, computer work, hospitality or other activities. Live-in monastery volunteers have time for private prayer, journaling, walking or other leisure activities and are invited to share in monastery educational opportunities. Volunteers are also invited to join the Benedictine Sisters for daily prayer (Liturgy of the Hours) and Mass.
